It was writen and produced by Legend and will I am for his debut album Get Lifted (2004). It was released as the album's second single and later certified gold by the RIAA.
Critics were positive towards the song, praising it for its raw emotion and simplicity.
In Ordinary People, Legend sings about how people make errors of judgement in relationships, and that fighting and making up in the end is a regular obstacle.
Ordinary People won the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
A review from The Guardian called the song "a real gem", and lauded further: "It's not only sonically arresting but lyrically reflective".
The song re-entered the Official UK Top 40 at number 27, and the following week climbed to number 4.
